That’s a really hard question, because there are lots of things I like about science but I think my absolute favorite thing is that we discover new things all the time, and to me that’s really exciting!
For example, this summer scientists found a new species of snake in Costa Rica. Noone had ever seen the snake or studied it before and I think new discoveries like that are very interesting. It’s the same in the research I do, when I find a new way to make my drugs it’s really exciting and very satisfying.
My favourite thing about science is when you found out something that makes you go ‘wow’. For example, at the University I am a student of they found bacteria which can use electricity to make food. Some clever person suggested reversing this process, and it seems to work therefore using bacteria to make electricity! *mind explodes*
I don’t think I ever really decided to be a scientist, it just happened! When it came to choosing my GCSE and A Level subjects (the exams you do at secondary school) I just picked the subjects I found the most interesting and the ones I enjoyed the most. I was really lucky to have some great science teachers and found that I liked doing the experiments so ended up doing Chemistry at University. I’m very glad I did too as the excitement of discovering new things is great!
