      Hi Caitlinr,

I was inspired to research into the tropical disease called leishmaniasis for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s a really nasty disease – it causes horrible skin infections, causing long term suffering and disability and kills around 30,000 people each year. Despite this, traditionally pharmaceutical companies haven’t spent so much time or effort developing treatments for it because the populations it affects are poorer with less access to healthcare than we have in the UK. So I felt it was something worthwhile to research and that I might be able to make a difference.

      Hi Caitlinr,

I have always been interested in science, and quite curious! After I was hit by a car when I was 17, I wanted to help people and help make the world a better place! After I completed my degree in chemistry, drug development seemed like the best way to do it! I was inspired to work on my project on anti cancer drugs by an excellent research proposal from my supervisor! Plus cancer is a terrible disease that needs more research!
