      Hi dedoid,

As I am a student we get a tax free ‘stipend’, and it equates to about £1,200 a month. It’s not a lot, but it is plenty to live on!

      Hi dedoid,

As oliver said, as a PhD student I get about £1,200 per month. That’s enough to live on!

When you graduate though, your salary can take a big jump! In the UK, postdoctoral chemists typically get paid about £30-35,000 per year. This continues to go up as you progress to industry or academia!

If you look to go abroad, the typical salary for a chemist in industry in Boston, USA with a PhD and 2 years postdoc experience is about $110,000! You also get paid more in countries like Switzerland (50,000 CHF per year as a PhD student!) and Germany…

      Hope this helps!
      Steve
