I worked in America for 6 months to do some research and spent 4 months of that not realising that American cookers work in Fahrenheit and not Celcius. In England we use the Celcius scale to measure temperatures (in cooking or on the weather forecast). The Celcius scale is based on the freezing point of water (at 0 degrees C). Americans use Fahrenheit, where the freezing point of water (or 0 degrees C) = 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This meant I was trying to cook all of my food at very low temperatures and just blowing warm air at my food! It was quite funny when I realised what had happened and made me feel very stupid! As scientists, we need to be very careful about what units we work in 🙂
